169Let my cry come before You, O LORD; Give me understanding according to Your word. 170 Let my supplication come before You; Deliver me according to Your word. 171 My lips shall utter praise, For You teach me Your statutes. 172 My tongue shall speak of Your word, For all Your commandments are righteousness. 173 Let Your hand become my help, For I have chosen Your precepts. 174 I long for Your salvation, O LORD, And Your law is my delight. 175 Let my soul live, and it shall praise You; And let Your judgments help me. 176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; Seek Your servant, For I do not forget Your commandments. Psalm 119:169-176
There are many times we cry before the Lord – for our circumstances, for our trials, for our tribulations, even for other people. It is especially at these times that we need for God to give us understanding according to His Word. We don’t always understand what or why we’re going through what we’re going through, but we want God to accept our tears before Him and give us understanding according to His Word. However, asking God to give us understanding according to His Word means that we cannot trust in any other source over what He says and we have to begin to look at our situations, our dilemma, etc. through the lens of His eyes and not our own.
Have you ever been in a tough situation and it seems that crying is not enough? Sometimes it isn’t –sometimes we are broken and we are standing in God’s presence with more than a cry, but rather a gut wrenching position – prostrate and humbled before Him – in need of deliverance! We understand that when our backs are against the wall and we have run out of our ideologies, our opinions, our safety-nets and simply – run out of options, we tend to go to God in search of healing, forgiveness and redemption. But God remains faithful even when we are faithless and He will deliver us – but we must allow His Word to saturate our being so much so that the next time we go to Him it is not because we have run out of options, but rather because we have been trusting Him all along and are simply praising Him, speaking His Word, and obeying His statutes because we know that He deserves our praise – in spite of what we’re going through and even if He should choose not to bring us out of our trials.
Our desire, our longing should be for the salvation of the Lord. Our delight should be in His law, in His Word – not for things, not for popularity, not for riches, not for any selfish ambition or vain glory! Lord, let YOUR hand become our help – not our wallets, not our stocks, not our positions, not our prestige. Let the things of the Lord become as a strong, consuming desire within you: then and only then – will your soul LIVE! Our soul can only truly live when it has been entrusted to Jesus!
When you wander, when you step away from the fold as a lost sheep, the Lord will seek you out, He will find you and He will deliver you! You may feel a little disconnected today, or you may be confused as to what to do next. There may appear to be a lot of dead things around you – dead finances, dead relationships, a dead future, etc. – don’t dwell on how it appears to be. Crying isn’t enough, start praising the Lord, start delighting in the Lord and your soul shall live!
