Tired of Being a Slave

1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. Galatians 5:1

There are many things in our lives that enslave us to the point where we are not being productive or effective. For the majority of us enslavement begins with our past.  We’ve had difficult upbringings and/or traumatic experiences that have bruised our being and the effects often follow us throughout our lives – causing us to process through our pain. Can you think of something that seems to be following your every move? It may not be at the forefront of your thought processes at all times, but it still seems to be lingering in the backdrop? If you can, it is holding you captive and it is time to break the yoke, the chains of bondage.

Paul’s advice to the church at Galatia almost seemed like a demand: Stand fast in the liberty by which Christ has made us free! The blood of Jesus Christ was shed to liberate us – to liberate us from sin, liberate us from the effects of the scars and the pain we’ve experienced – it’s transcending power is available to move us from bondage to freedom! And the beauty is that once we have been MADE free we do not have to be entangled again in bondage. We can really be free!

Part of the reason why we take up our yokes of bondage again is that we may not really believe that we are free or feel worthy of freedom. It reminds me of the end to the slavery system in America. I’m sure those slaves, who had been slaves all of their lives, were skeptical when they got the news that they were free. It must have been hard to believe or comprehend the end to such a ghastly time in history. But the slaves that were determined to move past the horrible injustices and create a better life for themselves were also determined not to be enslaved again! They passed down through their generations the tools necessary to overcome and be productive. They worked hard and some built wealth for themselves that they could pass down to future generations. Unfortunately, today we still see some of the effects of all those years of slavery – and some in our communities have resorted to enslaving themselves both mentally, spiritually and socially. But Christ has come to free us from all of the stains of our past, our mess-ups from the present and move us to become both productive and effective for Him.

You may have all kinds of generational curses, traumatic experiences or even shadows of things you’ve done lingering in the backdrop of your life. But TODAY you can be FREE – Christ has already MADE you free – accept the freedom and don’t be enslaved again. You ARE free – so walk in it!
