The Workmanship of God

But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,  5Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)  6And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:  7That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.  8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  9Not of works, lest any man should boast.  10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Ephesians 2:4-10

What a pleasure it is to know that God makes us alive! Before Christ we were dead in trespasses and sins and by grace and through His mercy and love He has quickened us – brought us back from the dead! What a wonderful expression of love that is toward us! Before Christ we walked according to our own lusts, according to the course of this world and according to the ways of the enemy. Our main purposes were to fulfill the desires of our flesh and our minds.  But God who is rich in mercy because of the great love He has for us, made us alive, raised us up, and made us to sit together in heavenly places!

We are not saved because of anything we could possibly do. We are saved through faith and by God’s grace – this is His gift to us! He gives out of love and He loves to give! What a mighty God we serve!

Verse 10 says that we are the workmanship of God – His masterpiece, His work of art, crafted specifically for good works which He has prepared beforehand. Before the foundation of the world He has created the works to which your hands will accomplish. He had already ordained those things to which you were created to do! Obviously this means that we cannot manufacture the works that we are to do ourselves. God has already set aside our gifts, our purposes, our works. Are you walking in the works God has pre-ordained for you or are the works you are doing your own doing?

We serve a God who is rich in mercy – His love toward us is so strong that He will not give us what we really deserve – death because of our sins. His Son has paid the penalty for those sins – past, present, and future – and His blood has raised us from our dead state and we are now seated in heavenly places. We are His work of art molded to do the work He has preordained for us. We are created to worship Him, to witness for Him and to live for Him!

Realize this day that you are a work of art of the Most High God. You are His workmanship! You are fearfully and wonderfully made to worship Him, represent Him and give Him praise! Walk in it!
