1My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
2And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
3And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
4He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
1 John 2:1-5
It must be the goal of every Christian not to sin. We will not be sinless, but we ought to sin less! And if we do sin, we have an advocate – someone who is going to stand on our behalf before the Father – Our Defense Attorney – Jesus Christ the righteous who presents as evidence the sacrifice he made on our behalf. However, we cannot expect God’s grace to cover our mess – shall we continue in sin that grace may abound – God forbid!
He is the propitiation – He satisfies our judgement – for one sin we ought to die – but Jesus satisfies our sentence – not just for our sins, but the sins of the whole world. You cannot be tried again for your sins – it’s just like Double Jeopardy – you cannot be tried twice for your sins because Jesus has satisfied the penalty
We know him if we keep his commandments. We will have fellowship with him, we will have intimacy with him – if we keep his commandments – we must follow his precepts, obey his word and live in loving existence to others
If you say you know him, but you don’t keep his commandments, you are a liar and the truth is not in you. You don’t know him if you don’t know who He is, you don’t know him if you don’t obey his word, you don’t know him if you hate your brother – the truth is not in you.
But he that keeps his word, in him is God’s love being perfected (are we perfect? No not as long as we have a sin nature) but God’s love is being manifested in our lives more and more and causing us to look like Him, and act like Him, and love like Him – more of Him and less of us – then we know that we are in Him!
Thank You, Lord, for the Finished Work of Calvary!
