The Boldness of My Soul

3 In the day when I cried out, You answered me, And made me bold with strength in my soul. Psalm 138:3

This Psalm of David is a magnificent testament to the majesty of God. David is well aware of his shortcomings, of his inability to be great without God’s intervention. He understands that he must possess humility and a heart of praise and thanksgiving if he is to be successful at anything in his life.

As encouraging as this Psalm is, a simple verse stuck out for me in the words of verse 3, “In the day when I cried out, You answered me, And made me bold with strength in my soul.” In the Hebrew it means you made me bold in my soul with strength. There are so many times in this journey of life at which we feel defeated. I know personally I sometimes feel defeated when there is a lack – be it lack of finances, lack of resources to accomplish the tasks I desire, etc. Many of us may face trial on our jobs or in our families, our marriages, and we must admit that we sometimes feel defeated. Notice that I did not say we ARE defeated, because those of us who know the Word of God realize that positionally we are not defeated – we may feel cast down, but we are not destroyed (2 Corinthians 4:9). But as the Psalm states, when we cry unto the Lord – through our brokenness, through our feelings of inadequacy and defeat – he not only hears us, but ANSWERS us and makes us bold in our souls with strength! He understands that you may feel anxious, he understands that you feel “less than”, he understands that you feel as if you are a failure or are FAILING, but he will answer your cries and make you bold with strength in your soul. That’s powerful! That’s something you can hold on to! That’s something you can take to the bank! Why boldness and strength? The strength will make you bold! Strength is to fortify you and keep you focused on the work that God has prepared your hands to do! Boldness will help you to stand strong against the enemy who is the author of your fears – whose main objective is to torment you in your soul. That strength and that boldness will get you to verse 8: The Lord will perfect that which concerns you! The ESV version says, “The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me!” The feelings that you feel are only a part of the blueprint of your life – they are pointing you to the place where you ought to be – the part you are to play in the kingdom – they are your stepping stones into God’s purpose!

So how do you deal with the feeling of defeat? You praise Him with your whole heart (v.1), You worship Him in the temple (v.2)! He will exchange your feelings with boldness and strength in your soul because His word is magni1ied and above all (v.2) and even though you walk in the midst of trouble – he will revive you (this implies that you may even get the wind knocked out of you) – but stand with humility and grace because he has your back and will raise you up against your enemies! He is invested in your success for his name’s sake!

So regardless of how you FEEL today, know that the Lord will give you boldness and strength for your soul! Praise Him, accept it and move on to the next level!
