The Blessing of His Presence

11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Psalm 51:11

David had a lot to worry about. He had committed some very grievous sins agains the Lord and he pleaded for the Lord to forgive him, restore him, and not turn His back on him. After receiving the blessing of God to be king, after receiving the praise and victory of battles won, David abused his power and committed adultery with a soldier’s wife, compounding that sin by having the soldier killed in order to hide the fact that he had impregnated his wife. Yes, I’m sure he questioned whether God would ever trust him again, could ever love him again or would He decide to leave David to his own devices.

Of course we know that God did not leave him, nor will He leave or forsake us when we grieve Him with our sins and our disobedience. However, Paul instructs us not to tempt God – shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Shall we keep on in our foolishness because God said He would always be with us? No, that’s a dangerous game to play.

Instead we must praise God and thank Him for the blessing of His presence. Many friends and family members will leave us when we do things they don’t like. We live in a society that will quickly abandon others when they don’t agree with them. We are quick to “disown” one another. But I’m so grateful and humbled by the blessing of God’s presence. Even when I fall, and trust me I am guilty of falling into my own mess and out of God’s plan for me, God is faithful, just, forgiving and ready to cleanse me from all unrighteousness and restore me to a right relationship with Him. He continually blesses me with His presence! Everywhere I turn He is there and as an extra gift He placed His Holy Spirit within me to confront me, console me and cause me to “get it right.”

As you go through your day today, no matter what you face or who you face, remember that God is there with you – He loves you and cares for you. Even when others turn away, you are blessed with the presence of God and the comfort of the Holy Spirit.
