10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
Ephesians 6:10-18 (NIV)
Surely with the saddening news of the campus killings in Illinois yesterday, we can acknowledge that we are living in some very terrible, tumultuous times. How do the Children of God handle all of these calamities? These scriptures in Ephesians help us to deal with evil in the world and calamity in our own lives. Paul says to be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Notice that we are not to rely on our own strength or ability – we would never make it if we did. We’ve got to arm ourselves with the precious Word of God so that when those evil times approach, and they will, we can rest and rely on what we know to be true: That God is still on the throne and nothing happens without Him knowing about it.
Arm yourself with God’s Word – find rest and support in His Word. Put on the full armour of God – this is a battle but the battle has already been won! When calamity strikes your life or the lives of those you know, find solace in God’s Word and protect yourself from the wiles of the enemy by placing yourself under the garments of salvation: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, your shield of faith, your helmet of salvation and the Sword of the Spirit. Guard up, my fellow saints – the time will come for you to utilize your weapons. And don’t forget to pray for all saints.
Stand strong in the Lord – Jesus is the remedy for all of life’s diseases!
