7in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
If ever you need to know what your purpose is in this life, the book of Ephesians can provide the answer. This passage and the preceding verses are key to your understanding God’s purpose for you! God has set us a part from those who are living their lives to please themselves because He wants to showcase His people to the world and in them and through them implant the incomparable riches of His grace, kindness and love so that others would know Who He Is! Why did He bring the Israelites out of Egypt? So that they would Worship Him – and declare to the other nations the sovereignty and grace of God!
We have done absolutely nothing to earn salvation – it is only by God’s grace, through the act of our faith, that God saves us. It is the greatest gift we’ve ever been given. Verse 9 says not by works that any man can boast: You can’t puff out your chest about any great thing you’ve done to earn salvation – you were born in sin and shaped in iniquity and there is no good thing in you, aside from Christ! We have been created by God to do good works – and He has prepared those works for us far in advance. He has outlined in His Word the things we need to do as His workmanship – No, they are not things that will bring attention to us – but rather things that would bring attention to Him! Even Jesus recognized and proclaimed that He didn’t come to seek glory for Himself, but to bring glory to His Father!
What is your purpose? That you be a showcase of His incomparable grace, that your life points to Jesus Christ and that His working through you is not a sideshow to your own motives and selfish pleasures. Want to walk in your purpose? Seek to please Him with your WHOLE life – Show off the grace and mercy God has extended to you!
