23 I know, O LORD, that a man’s life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps.
Famed Gospel composer, consummate musician Glenn Burleigh died recently. He is best known for penning the Gospel song, Order My Steps, sung in almost every church choir across the nation! Beside the wonderful piece of music that it is, the eloquence of the lyrics speaks to every Christian’s heart. Surely we understand that God must order our steps – we cannot, in and of ourselves, make the best choices for our lives unless God be in the pilot seat. We’ve seen too often how our choices and our guidance has led us astray and we recognize with certainty from Psalm 23 that we are in need of a Gentle Shepherd – the Good Shepherd that guides and directs our lives.
Jeremiah, too, understood that a man’s life is not his own – it is not for man to direct his steps. When we try we find out how messed up we really are and how wonderful a Savior we have. When we allow God to order our steps – wash our heart, and guide our feet in His Word – we relinquish our steps to the One that knows us best! God made us and He knows what we need to make it in this life. He has given us His Word, a Savior, and the Holy Spirit to develop us into sheep that will follow and represent His grace to the nations.
We’ve got to get to the point where we stop trying to order our own steps. We’ve got to activate the faith that is within us and relinquish our total lives and being over to the One that has purchased our lives from the marketplace of sin and has breathed His Holy Spirit within us.
God has some pretty amazing things for you to do, should you choose to accept the challenge you must allow Him to order your steps. Are you prepared to go where He’ll send you? Then you must get out of the way and let Him lead you.
