In the Midst of Dirt

9Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.

10With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.

11Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

12Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes.

13With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth.

14I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches.

15I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.

16I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.

Psalm 119:9-16

How can we stay clean in the midst of a dirty environment? There is dirt all around us – in our society, in our country, in our world and yes, even in some of our churches! There are elements of the world’s evil system peeking through and cluttering up many facets of our lives. How can we stay clean? How can we continue to show the purity of God’s message – of His endless love for us when we are bombarded with the dirtiness the world offers?

The answer lies in Psalm 119 which says that we can cleanse our way by taking heed to God’s Word and by seeking Him with our whole heart.  We may not be able to control the messages of the world around us but we can consistently work on ourselves and our response to those messages! If we want to walk upright and godly before the Lord, OUR ways must be clean! We cannot pretend to be His ambassadors and our ways, actions, motives and behaviors are just as dirty as the world’s! We’ve got to commit ourselves to daily intaking the Word of God and actively doing what it says! We’ve got to seek God with our whole heart! That means that everything else we are seeking in this world: job prestige, status, material things, whatever – they must take a back seat to our desire to seek God! We can’t give God half of our heart – or what’s left of our heart after we’ve sought other things and people with our heart. When we seek Him wholeheartedly, when we hide His Word in our hearts, when we speak as He speaks, when we rejoice in His testimonies, when we meditate on His precepts and respect His ways, when we delight ourselves in Him – we will not forget His Word, we will not wander from His commandments, we will not sin against Him and we will be clean and upright before Him – not stained by the all of the dirt, filth and unrighteousness that surrounds us! We can be clean in the midst of the dirt – if we continue to put the Master first!
