If Loving You is Wrong

3We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. 4The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: 6Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. I John 2:3-6

I know that most of you immediately began to hear Ingram Luther’s voice thundering in your mind as you read the title of this devotional. The popular song If Loving You is Wrong, I don’t wanna be right was an Oldie but Goodie that many of us are familiar with.

The song came to me as I reflected today on my 18th wedding anniversary. Yes, I’ve been married for 18 years today and am so grateful and honored that God has blessed me with such a God-fearing man.

What made that song so popular? I think it was the fact that all of us, if not now, have been at one time or another in love with someone and the love we had for that person was so strong that we would choose it over anything else. Some of us can testify that we were in relationships that were really wrong for us and even when others tried to tell us – all we could see was the love and not the reality! If loving him was wrong, we sure didn’t want to be right!

If we can feel so strongly for a love that isn’t meant to be, not God ordained, nor even good for us – then how can we not feel as strongly for a love that is so good for us and so right for us as is the love of Christ? We know that the love we exchange with the Lord is good – it is perfect and it is pure! The Word says that if we love Him, we will keep his commandments. If we obey His word then His love is truly made complete in us – If we love Him, we will walk in His way!

If we love Him, then He can count on us to be obedient to Him, He can count on us to follow Him and to walk as Jesus did! Remember that fierceness with which you defended that “wrong” relationship? Remember how all you could see was the “love” and not the reality? Remember how you would follow that love to the end – regardless of what anyone else said? Well, will you do the same for the “right” love that God shares with you? Will you follow Him to the end? Will you defend that love with your life?

Love Him with all of your heart, your mind and your soul then you can change the lyrics to the song – If loving God is right, then you don’t want to be wrong!
