26 Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever. Psalm 136:26
Verses 10-26 of this psalm basically outline Israel’s history and the many times the Lord redeemed them out of their circumstances.
Unlike many other cultures, the Jewish people have been awarded the opportunity to know exactly when their history began and to see their history unfold in the pages of scripture. Of course there are some cultures that have maintained historical accounts and have passed down those nuggets to other generations. Unfortunately, for many, specifically African American people, these important historical facts are fragmented.
The child of God, however, can rest assure that no matter your cultural background, when you come to the knowledge of Jesus Christ and embrace Him as Savior, you can look back at your own life and see His hand moving on your behalf throughout your life. His love toward you has been constant, has been easily identifiable and will endure forever. Remember the accidents you walked away from? Remember the times he healed your body? Remember how He spared your life or that of your loved ones? Remember the dangers seen and unseen that He protected you from? Remember when He showed up in the nick of time, at the right time, just in time? Remember how He brought you through that situation you thought was bigger than life? Throughout your days, throughout your own personal history, He has been maintaining you, protecting you and working on your behalf.
It doesn’t matter if you know your family’s historical beginning. Yes, it’s great information and wonderful to know and to be able to have a cultural identity. But, trust that as a child of God He has always been there with you through your own history – and the love that He has for you shall endure. It will endure through whatever test or trial you go through. It will endure past your pain and through your victories. It will endure whether you “feel” it or not, whether you recognize it or not or whether you feel worthy or not. His love for you shall endure forever! He’s just good like that!
