4 Indeed you fast for strife and debate, And to strike with the fist of wickedness. You will not fast as you do this day, To make your voice heard on high.
I know this sounds like a strange passage – but there’s a great lesson in it. God was telling the Children of Israel that their fasting was an empty gesture. They sought their own pleasure while fasting, they oppressed others, they quarreled and their fasting did not bring them closer to God but they thought that God should be pleased with their religiosity – they were religious without relationship. As women of standard we must cringe at sin, both in our own lives and the lives of others. What does it mean to cringe? To shrink away from, shy away from, get embarrassed, in essence – get away from it – its annoying, its undesirable, its embarrassing and God can’t use it. Sin ought to make your skin crawl! It should make you want God even more. It should grieve your spirit and force you to cry out. I know we live in a day and time where people aren’t talking about sin anymore! It’s unpopular and politically incorrect to talk about sin. But we’ve got to stand on His Word and not just while we are flexing our spiritual muscles inside the four walls of our churches. What do others say about you? Do they say you act one way in church and another at home or at work? That in church you’re holy, but at other times everything goes? If you are going to be the godly woman that God has called you to be – you must be consistent! You must not get involved in the office gossip, it shouldn’t be easy for people to include you in their mess! Proverbs 26:4 says “Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will be like him yourself. We live in a day when so much is accepted – all kinds of wickedness and perversions, but you have to stand on God’s Word even if you stand alone!
If that means you’ve got to purge yourself of some folks, then you have to do it! How can you say you want to be what God wants, you want His perfect will to be done in your life, you want the ministry and the plan He has for you but you don’t get rid of some of the junk in your life?
You have been bought with a precious price! You can’t continue on as if there was no blood shed on your behalf! Colossians 1: 21 says, “And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight.” Christ’s blood has redeemed you back to the Father – you are now a part of the elect – you have been reconciled with God through the blood of Jesus Christ. Through that blood you are presented holy and blameless and above reproach! Don’t you realize that you should be dead? Don’t you realize that you escaped the penalty of your sin – past, present and future? Then walk in it! Stand upright and be the woman that God has called you to be! Be strong my sister, You can do it!
