Approval Ratings

6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed. 10 For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.Galatians 1:6-10

During this election season we have heard so much about approval ratings. We’ve seen national polls indicate that approval ratings for President Bush are at an all time low – the lowest in history while we’ve also seen approval ratings for both candidates and running mates go up and down constantly.  Although I don’t quite put a lot of stock in our national polling system, there is only one approval rating that concerns me the most: am I being pleasing to the Lord?

Paul admonished the Galatians about turning to a different gospel – allowing others to convince them of something other than the Gospel which they had been taught. Paul stated that this walk is not about pleasing man – being accepted by others or agreeing to what they say, especially if contrary to God’s Word! This walk is about pleasing the Lord!

I am disappointed with some of the things I’ve seen during this present election period. So many people are angry and bitter – choosing rather to belittle or assassinate the character of one another rather than to have honest dialogue and fairness – some are even doing this in the name of the Lord! Let’s face it – we’re not all going to agree on the same things! I’m sorry but Christ was neither a Democrat, Republican nor Independent! He is the Son of God and He asks of His people to live holy and with integrity and honor and to represent Him before a dying world.

Believe me this devotional is not about the politics – but it is about Christians maintaining integrity at all costs, in all situations! Whether you are with friends in a back room, or whether you are in front of a large group, or at home with your loved ones – are you pleasing God with what you say and do? We are in this world and not of this world – yes, we must take a stand on issues that we believe in – but we must understand that this world is not our home and we can’t expect the world to live according to that Word – this world’s system is run by its father – Satan. So while we are in it we must represent the true intent of the Word of God – to reach out to the sinner, exalt the Savior and encourage the saints! Don’t get sidetracked by issues and people – continue to walk in the Spirit of God and don’t seek the approval of others – neither through your opinions or your actions! The only Approval Rating most important is how your life will line up with the Word of God!
