And Then…

Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Joshua 1:7-8

Joshua had been primed to succeed Moses in leading the Israelites to the Promised Land.  In these two beautiful verses the Lord, Himself, encourages Joshua and assures him of His presence and pending victories.  How awesome it must have been to hear the Lord’s voice as Joshua faced the daunting task of leading an often stiff-necked and rebellious people!

We, too, have God’s assurance that as we are strong and courageous in the tasks He entrusts us with that we will be victorious.  However, we, too, have a part to play, a responsibility similar to Joshua’s : Doing God’s Word, Not looking to anyone but Jesus, Not letting God’s Word escape our mouths, meditating on His Word continuously and obeying it…..AND THEN He will make our way prosperous and give us good success.

Many times we want to bypass all of those spiritual things and head right into the prosperousness and good successes.  But just as Joshua had prerequisites followed by “AND THEN” – so do we! We cannot expect God to just show up and bless us immeasurably without us being obedient to His Word.  Yes, sometimes He will bless us in spite of us and despite our disobedience – but don’t be mocked – He is sovereign and He does to us according to His mercy and grace.

You have been given tasks by the Master – Be strong and courageous in what you have been assigned, but don’t let His Word depart from your mouth, Do according to what is in the Word….AND THEN He will make your way prosperous and give you good success! Don’t forget the AND THEN!!!!
