5 LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure.
Psalm 16:5 (NIV)
Sometimes I just want to complain about my circumstances. We use a pretty little word to do this without judgment: we like to call it venting. All of us experience these moments where we are just not satisfied with what’s going on in our lives. It’s almost as if we believe that we deserve a certain type of life or that we shouldn’t have to go through this or that. This Psalm really brings a great dynamic to our issues: the Lord has ASSIGNED our portion and our cup! WHEW! I can go through tantrums and complain about what’s not right, what I want, what I should have, what I shouldn’t have to deal with – BUT at the end of the day the Lord has ASSIGNED me my portion and my cup. That means that whatever I’ve gone through, whatever I’m going through and whatever faces me if tomorrow comes: it has all been assigned to me by the Lord! It reminds me of school when a teacher or professor assigns a project or homework, etc. – you can complain about it all you want, you can sulk, you can scream but it doesn’t change the fact that you were given the assignment and you are expected to go through it. The Lord has assigned us the lives we have and the end result (our lot) He has made secure. He’s already provided the answer to our problems, the solutions to our dilemmas – even if we can’t see it right now. It all goes back to truly trusting Him. Do less complaining and be more compliant! He has assigned you t he life you have, regardless of what you’re dealing with – but the end result is that He has already made your lot (your end result) secure!
